BREAKFASTS AT VIEWFORTH

Tactile pleasures at VIEWFORTH -- the lovely contrasts of silken hollyhock petals against rough cedar shingles; billowy down comforters covered in nubby Russian linen; a smooth leather armchair next to a deeply-textured antique kelim; a perfectly balanced, hammered-silver breakfast knife for smoothing butter atop a crumbly, streusel-topped coffee cake -- and the cake is only one of the taste treats you can expect at breakfast ---

At VIEWFORTH, every morning is "Sunday morning" as we pay tribute to this much-neglected meal in America. The breads, the biscuits, the English sourdough muffins -- all are rising and baking while guest are still dreaming. The aroma of freshly-baked goods, the early morning call of the meadowlark -- does waking up get any better?

Just prior to returning to Montana, the Blandings lived in Oregon where they owned and operated Lavender's Blue -- A TEA ROOM which garnered the coveted 3-star rating and description of being "the best tea room in the Northwest" by Northwest Best Places, the renowned guidebook.

The accolades are now coming out of VIEWFORTH.

Another round of breakfast

The breakfast changes each morning of your stay. The silver is polished, the beautiful napkins and tablecloths, chosen from a collection of vintage linens, are truly linen (no synthetics here!) perfectly ironed.

Breakfast conversations are lively as hosts discover guests' interests and share their own.
Topics range from

Bear population on the Front to

      Corporate culture in America to

Zucchini varieties in the garden, visible outside the dining room window.

After breakfast, you may want to meander in the kitchen garden with the morning sun as your companion. The formal, French raised beds radiate out from a central tuteur, but the planting is informal, an exuberance of color and texture where cabbages co-habit with cosmos and periwinkle and peppers intertwine.

A short stroll to the pasture brings you to the lambs, the ewes and "Augustus", the imposing Blackface Highland ram. Watching over all is the luscious-eyed llama, "Andreus", humming while he guards -- a compatible, happy bunch! The hens, all the while, busily preen and peck and strut and cluck.

Extended-stay guests are welcome to remain at VIEWFORTH all day if desired, basking in the rarefied atmosphere (elevation 4,280 ft)!

Picnics and suppers are possible with advance request. Additional charges will be made to the basic Bed and Breakfast rate.
